What now?
Big day today in baseball - not for the Mets - but a lot to report. Ben Sheets signs with the A's. Ive made my opinion clear about Sheets before and ill say it again. Certainly now that he signed for 10 mill plus. Havent we had enough injuries? I suppose the two best pitchers remaining after Sheets were Jon Garland and Jarrod Washburn. As i said before i would prefer Washburn. Although apparently it doesnt matter because as metsblog.com reported earlier the Padres have signed Jon Garland and according to Foxsports Washburn is only interested in either the Twins or the Mariners. So now what do the Mets do? Lets see how the off-season has gone so far. Lackey was never interested. Wolf was too much money. Berdard is not worth the risk. They want to cut ties with Pedro. Pinero apparently wasnt interested. Washburn isnt interested. Garland wanted to go to a west coast team. The one guy who wanted to sign with them, Jason Marquis, signed with (gulp) the Nationals. Each one by itself doesnt sound too bad but put it all together and what do you got? NOTHING! Right now Fernando Nieve is the Mets fifth starter. And hes the only non-question mark. So the Mets will either go with what they got, try to tread water until the trade deadline when they can get someone, or go after - yikes! - John Smoltz? Honestly - im not sure what the best option is. Metsblog also reported that Noah Lowry will be working out for some teams. Lowry of course hasnt pitched since 2007 and accuses the Giants of misdiagnosing him so he would fit right in.
